Works to modernise the track began in the late 1930s and were well advanced when they were interrupted and halted by the Second World War. Works were completed from Highgate to High Barnet and Mill Hill East and that section was incorporated into the Northern Line between 1939 and 1941. Further works on the section between Finsbury Park, Highgate and Alexandra Palace were postponed and the line continued under the operation of the LNER. Because of wartime economies services were reduced to rush hours only, so that after the war the dwindling passenger numbers and a shortage of funds led to the cancellation of the unfinished works in 1950 and passenger services to Crouch End station were ended by British Railways on 3 July 1954 along with the rest of the line between Finsbury Park and Alexandra Palace.

Upper Holloway

Upper Holloway is a district in the London Borough of Islington, London. The name has fallen out of common use and the area is generally regarded as being a part of Archway. The use of 'Upper Holloway' is most often used for Upper Holloway railway station. Upper Holloway is the original designation of the N19 postal district. The classic late Victorian comic novel Diary of a Nobody is set in Upper Holloway.

Moorgate station

Under the Thameslink Programme the platforms at Farringdon are being extended at the southern end of the station to accommodate 12 carriage trains. The proximity of Farringdon Junction to the station itself means that the extended platforms will be over the junction. As a consequence, the junction has been removed, leaving only the route through the Snow Hill tunnel, and the Moorgate branch closed. The closure took effect on 20 March 2009 - the final service having departed Moorgate at 19:54.[4] However, the platforms remained in use as a turnaround for First Capital Connect services that were starting and terminating at Farringdon, and as a stable for extra trains during times of service disruption, until the work to extend Farringdon's platforms began in late 2009.[5]
