Brockwell Park contains a number of amenities, including tennis courts, a bowling green, a BMX track and a miniature railway[5].
It is located in Brixton Road, and is about 100m from Brixton railway station[4] (on the London Victoria to Orpington line, operated by South Eastern). From the ticket hall, three escalators take passengers to and from the platforms. There are also passenger lifts between street level, the ticket hall and the platforms. The station was briefly closed for asbestos removal in 2006.
HMP Brixton's primary role is to serve the local magistrates courts, as well as Inner London Crown Courts in holding remand and trial prisoners. Accommodation at Brixton comprises four main residential units, plus a health care unit. A new Kitchen is currently being built and plans are in discussion to replace the Reception, Healthcare, & Sports complex.
The following London Buses serve the station (frequencies are weekday off-peak, correct as at 11 June 2006)
Until the early 20th century Coldfall Wood covered more than twice its current extent, reaching south to the properties bordering Fortis Green.[2] The southern section was felled and partially excavated for gravel, before being used for residential development and the sites of Tollington and William Grimshaw schools (later Fortismere School). Tollington first rented and felled part of the wood for a sports field in the 1920s[3] and subsequently moved to a new building on the site. William Grimshaw was built later to the north.
