Southend East is a railway station in Southend-on-Sea on the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway which was opened in 1884. It has two through platforms, Platform 1 for trains to London Fenchurch Street and Platform 2 for trains to Shoeburyness railway station, and one disused bay platform. Train services are provided by the National Express Group train operating company c2c.
Originally a 72-step terrace, financial troubles in the mid-1990s saw the old terrace reduced dramatically before being replaced by a two-tier stand.
Southend has two football teams, one of league stature, Southend United, managed by Paul Sturrock. The other, Southend Manor, play in the Essex Senior League. United competed in Football League One (the third highest division of the English football league system) after being relegated after finishing third from bottom of Football League Championship at the end of the 2006?07 season.
The recently built North Stand was completed for the start of the 2007-08 season and is currently used as a family stand. It replaces a former open terrace and now has a large block of flats behind the stand. It has a capacity of 1,351 which includes provision for disabled supporters and has the letters L O F C marked into the seats. Access to this stand is by turnstiles at each end of the stand and there are two refreshment outlets located underneath the stand.
