The civil parish is a small one, consisting of Simpson itself, Ashland and West Ashland.
The only direct action that the site experienced was when three bombs, thought to have been intended for Bletchley railway station, were dropped on 20?21 November 1940. One exploded next to the despatch riders' entrance, shifting the whole of Hut 4 (the Naval Intelligence hut) two feet on its base. As the huts stood on brick pillars, workmen just winched it back into position while work continued inside.
The Grand Union Canal runs through the southern outskirts of the town and Fenny Lock is located a few tens of yards to the east of Watling Street. It is notable both for the manually-operated swing bridge which crosses the lock and for the very small rise in the lock (around 30 cm or 12 inches). This was deemed necessary by the canal engineers in order to avoid building an expensive embankment off to the east. The level persists from this lock for eleven miles, through what is now Milton Keynes and the older town of Wolverton, to the next lock at Cosgrove.
It was close to the Great Northern Railway and had its own station.[1]
