Harringay Arena

In the 1940s the Arena hosted ground breaking classical music events popularising classical music for the first time including the London Music Festival in 1947 and 1948. The '48 festival included the hugely popular London debut of Pierino Gamba.[12] 10,000 people watched this ten year old boy conduct the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra playing Beethoven and DvoÅ?ák. The festival also featured the world-famous Manuel Rosenthal, who brought his Orchestre National de France to join Sir Thomas Beecham and the Royal Philharmonic in a concert that filled the Harringay Arena with 13,500 listeners

The first world final for stock cars took place at Harringay on 24 June 1955. The cars returned to Harringay for the World Championship finals in 1963, 1967, 1970 and 1973. By the 1960s and '70s British stock cars had evolved away from second-hand wrecks into purpose-built single-seater "specials" of enormous power and well-constructed, costing thousands of pounds to build.

The Northern Heights plan involved the building of a connection to the surface platforms at Finsbury Park and the transfer of a London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) branch from there to Edgware, High Barnet and Alexandra Palace. By 1939 much of the work for the connection of the lines had been done and the opening of the connection was scheduled for autumn 1940 but the start of World War II put a halt to further construction. After the war the uncompleted parts of the plan were cancelled and Northern Line trains continued to run to Finsbury Park on what became known as the Northern City Line or, from 1970, the Northern Line Highbury Branch.
