Richmond station (London) is a National Rail and London Underground station in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in south west London which is managed by South West Trains. It is on the National Rail Waterloo to Reading Line on which South West Trains services run, and is the western terminus for services of London Overground on the National Rail North London Line and of London Underground District line trains. The next station to the northeast on the terminating lines is Kew Gardens. On the through line Richmond is between North Sheen and St. Margarets stations.
During 1997 the site was investigated in the Channel 4 programme Time Team which was broadcast in January 1998.[1]
Construction began on 23 August 1774.[19] The Prince of Wales was invited to lay the first stone but declined, and so the stone was laid by commission member Henry Hobart.[21] The bridge opened to pedestrians in September 1776 and to other traffic in January 1777, at which time the ferry service was closed,[13] although work on the bridge was not completed until December 1777.[19] A large milestone was placed at the Richmond end, giving the distances to other bridges and to local towns.[22]
Roundel on southbound platform
The station has a large adjacent area, originally for storing coal and now used as a car park. Until about 2000, there was a second car park. A block of flats has now been built on this area. (The flats are clearly visible in the linked picture of platforms).
