St Augustine's Tower Hackney

In Tudor times, many members of the court used the church, including Ralph Sadleir (Bryck Place), Thomas Sutton (The Tan House), Thomas Cromwell and the Earl of Northumberland (Brooke House). Samuel Pepys visited the church in 1667, after resting at the local Mermaid Inn, he remarked on the fine organ but confessed in his diary that which we went chiefly to see was the young ladies of the schools, whereof this is great store, very pretty.[2] Hackney being renowned for its girls schools, at the time.[1]

London Fields

London Fields sports a cricket pitch, a newly reopened Lido, (the only heated outdoor 50 metre swimming pool in London), areas of grass, a small BMX track, tennis courts, a table tennis table and two children's play areas. London Fields received a Green Flag award in July 2008.[2] A much-used cycle path runs from Pub on the Park to Broadway Market. London Fields also has a railway station linking it to Hackney Downs railway station and to Liverpool Street Station in the City. The Pub on the Park is the starting point for the annual Dunwich Dynamo night cycle ride.

Hackney (parish)

A distinct civil parish dates from 1855, with the incorporation of The Vestry of the Parish of Hackney in the County of Middlesex by section 42 of the Metropolis Management Act. With Stoke Newington it formed part of the Hackney District, governed by the Hackney District Board of Works, within the area of the Metropolitan Board of Works. In 1894, the district and board were dissolved, with the Hackney vestry taking on its duties within the parish.

London Charterhouse

In 1348, Walter de Manny rented 13-acre (0.05 km2) of land in Spital Croft, north of Long Lane, from the Master and Brethren of St. Bartholomew's Hospital for a graveyard and plague pit for victims of the Black Death. A chapel and hermitage were constructed, renamed New Church Haw; but in 1371, this land was granted for the foundation of the London Charterhouse, a Carthusian monastery.[2]

St John (restaurant)

St. John has won numerous awards and accolades, including Best British and Best overall London Restaurant at the 2001 Moet & Chandon Restaurant Awards. It has also been consistently placed in Restaurant's annual list of the Top 50 restaurants in the world. Most recently it was placed 43rd, down fron 14th in the 2009 rankings. It was awarded a Michelin star in 2009.[4]
