Stone House is one of the oldest and most distinctive buildings in the London Borough of Lewisham.
The College provides, amongst other things, catering facilities, a chaplaincy, a medical centre, a gym for student use and a nursery although the college intends to close the nursery at the end of September 2010.[32]. Additionally, Goldsmiths Students' Union runs two bars, The Common Room and, above, The Stretch, which links across Dixon Road from the Richard Hoggart Building, hosts numerous entertainment events including karaoke, Quidz pub quiz on Mondays, the legendary Club Sandwich club night open until between 2 and 3am on Wednesdays and a variety of other nights often featuring indie music. The union also provides student representation[33] and runs both a student magazine (Smiths[34]) and a radio station broadcast online and locally by FM (Wired[35]). All Goldsmiths students are also able to make use of the facilities of the University of London Union.
The Great Northern Palace Company had been established by 1860, but it was unable to raise the finance for the project. However, the idea lived on, and on 23 July 1863 Alexandra Park was opened to the public. It was named after Alexandra of Denmark, who had married Prince Edward, the Prince of Wales, four months earlier. In September 1865 construction of the palace commenced, but to a design different from the glass structure initially proposed by architect Owen Jones.
