On the morning of 12 December 1988 two collisions involving three commuter trains occurred slightly south-west of the station. Thirty-five people died and more than 100 were injured.
The original name of the theatre was linked with the pub downstairs, but in 2002, the theatre relaunched under Artistic Director Paul Higgins under its new name of Theatre503 as a home for new writing. In November 2006 Paul Robinson and Tim Roseman were appointed as artistic directors with the specific brief to develop the profile of the theatre, and the new theatre launched with the European Premiere of The Atheist.

This is the final Chapel service for Upper Sixth leavers, held each May. In this service students will sing the school anthem, Jerusalem as well as the school song. The Chaplain blesses all those leaving the school and hopes for prosperity for the future.

Under the railway bridge carrying trains to Blackfriars Station from the south some urban art work has been placed on the south-side, whilst on the north-side the word 'BANKSIDE' has been placed in very large lettering occupying most of the wall against the pavement. This is part of the area and tourist branding as the relationship with the ancient district of Bankside is tenuous, the most that can be said is that Southwark Street defines the southernmost limit of Bankside.
