Below ground, the station is dominated by a huge concrete box, large enough to accommodate one of the Canary Wharf skyscrapers on its side. It is lined by a series of huge concrete pillars designed to take the weight of a planned nine-storey building on the surface as well as the roadway and bus station.[6] The station has four lifts and eight escalators with an average rise of about 6.5 m (21 ft) to connect the lower parts of the station with street level. It is built on three levels: the ticket office and shops lie immediately below ground, the two north-south East London line platforms are situated on the second level 11 m (36 ft) below the ground, and the two east-west Jubilee line platforms are on the lowest level 22 m (72 ft) down.
Rotherhithe railway station is a station under contruction in Rotherhithe. It is on the East London Railway, on London Overground, between Wapping and Canada Water, and is in Zone 2. The station, and the entire East London Line, closed at the end of service on 22 December 2007 and will reopen by May 2010. It will become part of the new London Overground system. The station was also closed between 1995 and 1998 due to repair work on the East London Line's Thames Tunnel.
The area rapidly gentrified around the river, and when the Jubilee Line was extended[1] in 1999, the focus moved to the area immediately around the lake. The opening of the new Canada Water tube station gave the area rapid connections to the rest of London, with Canary Wharf one stop, Westminster less than 10 minutes, and Bond Street around 15 minutes away by underground train. The station's connection to the London Overground network in 2010 has added a quick connection to the City of London, with a journey of around 10 minutes to Shoreditch High Street station, near Liverpool Street Station.
The station was located in the area of Southgate Council and, following protests from the council, it was eventually renamed Oakwood on 1 September 1946.[4][5]
Bus routes 121, 125, 298, 299, 382, 628, 688, 699, W6, 616 and N91 serve Southgate Station.
