In the 17th century, the park was landscaped, possibly by André Le Nôtre who is known at least to have designed plans for it. The public were first allowed into the park during the 18th century. Samuel Johnson visited the park in 1763 and commented Is it not fine?. The famous hill to the north of the observatory was used on public holidays for mass ?tumbling?.
In October 2003, the local history library was moved to a new site on the Royal Arsenal site in Woolwich[3] - now the Greenwich Heritage Centre,[4] and the gallery subsequently closed. The council sought proposals to redevelop Woodlands House, the adjacent Mycenae House and surrounding grounds, with a proposal incorporating premises for a local Steiner School being approved in July 2006.[5]
Victoria Miro opened her first gallery in Cork Street, West London, in 1985, where she became one of the principal dealers,[4] although the premises at 750 square feet (70 m2) were little larger than a studio apartment.[8] In the late 1980s, she opened a second gallery in Italy, but shut it in 1991 after the art market slump.[8]
